You want to be able to support others with anxiety, even if you're not a therapist
You want to help but don't understand anxiety or how to give the support needed.
You want to learn how or improve your ability to hold space and co-regulate others
You want to learn practical tools that you can use when someone is experiencing anxiety or panic attacks to help turn the anxiety alarm off.
Or maybe you experience anxiety yourself and want to learn effective techniques to get out of your head and self regulate
As anxiety isn't a physical injury, a paramedic or a hospital visit isn't necessary (trust me, I've been that person in A&E thinking I was having a heart attack and dying, only to find out it was a panic attack).
Anxiety and panic attacks don't require emergency services and even professional help means waiting for an appointment with a therapist, often with long waiting lists.
What anyone who has experiences anxiety and panic attacks needs in that moment, is someone that understands anxiety and can help them feel safe in my body.
This switches off the anxiety alarm and regulates the nervous system.
Telling someone they are safe and there's nothing wrong isn't enough.
They have to FEEL safe in their body for the anxiety and panic to pass.
This safety can be achieved through self regulation via somatic (body based) exercises that you can guide someone experiencing anxiety to do.
However someones ability to self regulate is limited, especially when experiencing high levels of anxiety as they would need to create enough safety to combat the anxiety within them.
Our bodies are always speaking to each other. I'm sure you have walked into a room and felt like you are walking on egg shells when someone is angry or in a bad mood.
This is an example of co-dysregulation, where one persons nervous system that is stressed, negatively impacts your body making you also stressed.
This can happen when someone is anxious too, because you care and want them to be okay it creates stress in your body too.
The problem with this is that now both bodies are stressed and their body perceives this as:
"You're not okay and I'm not okay with what you are experiencing. You don't feel safe and neither do I"
This reaffirms their anxiety.
But if you understand anxiety and can recognise it in yourself and others and you're able to regulate yourself out of the stress state and signal safety in your body, their body perceives this as:
"Even though you're not okay and you don't feel safe in your experience, I am 100% okay and feel safe with your experience"
This communicates to their body that what they are experiencing is safe and this allows their body to feel safe to soften into their experience and turn off the anxiety alarm.
Co-Regulation is a skill that anyone can develop and what I will be teaching in the Anxiety First Aid Course.
I created The Anxiety First Aid Course after working with over 1000 clients and realising what every single one of them needed was someone that could co-regulate them in moments of anxiety and panic.
Even if my diary wasn't fully booked and they could book a session with me for the very next day, what they really need is someone there for them in their most crucial moments of need so they aren't stuck in survival mode until their next therapy session.
My work is based around holding space and co-regulating my clients. I believe that these skills are needed far beyond the therapy room and instead should be fundamental skills that every human learns to create a healthier and happier world.
I also wanted to create a course that actually taught practical skills that help, instead of just referring someone on.
While I always recommend people seek professional help, in a moment of crisis, a safe human connection is is needed first and foremost.
